United Airlines expands seating capacity to and from Hamburg Airport

26.10.2015 -

United Airlines is expanding its commitment to Hamburg Airport in time for the start of the winter timetable. As of today, United Airlines will be flying even more passengers non-stop between Hamburg and the airline’s New York hub, Newark Liberty International Airport. In future, the world’s second-largest airline will be deploying a larger aircraft on the route than has been used to date, a wide-bodied Boeing 767-300. United Airlines is also significantly increasing the amount of freight carried. Until now, the airline has served the route with a narrow-bodied Boeing 757-200 aircraft.

“We are delighted that the United Airlines service from Hamburg is being expanded. The use of larger aircraft underlines the success of the Hamburg–New York route. United is responding to the strong demand on this non-stop route and at the same time increasing comfort levels for passengers,” says Michael Eggenschwiler, CEO of Hamburg Airport. „United is a reliable partner of Hamburg Airport. In June this year, we celebrated together the tenth anniversay of the non-stop Hamburg–New York service. This demonstrates the great success and continuity of the route. Since the service began in 2005, the airline has carried over 900,000 passengers on more than 6,000 flights on the route."

More comfort for business and leisure travellers
The Boeing 767-300 has 80 Economy seats, along with 71 Economy Plus, 26 Business Class and 6 First Class. This represents twice as many premium seats as in the narrow-bodied Boeing 757-200. For the first time, United Airlines is offering First Class seats on the Hamburg–New York route. The new aircraft is also characterised by more legroom, more space in the two aisles, and a sophisticated entertainment program. United Airlines also offers a comprehensive range of services to passengers on the flight. From 6 January, 2016, the airline will be deploying a modernised version of the B767-300 with a total of 214 seats, a further increase of 31 seats from the aircraft now being used.

Tourist numbers from the USA growing
In total, some 116,000 passengers flew the Hamburg – New York route in 2014, the majority using the non-stop United Airlines service. “As a vacation destination, Hamburg has been consistently growing in popularity with Americans in recent years,” says Eggenschwiler. “In 2014 alone, 85,000 US citizens visited the city. That is 77 percent more than a decade ago.” US visitors are currently the fifth-largest national visitor group in Hamburg.

New service for non-stop cargo to USA
Starting this autumn, the United Airlines freight service is directly linking two major commercial regions. This aspect of the route is of interest to many Hamburg companies. The upcoming opening of Hamburg Airport's new freight facility will open up many new opportunities for Hamburg's economy. The new Hamburg Airport Cargo Center has been designed with an annual capacity of up to 150,000 tonnes of air freight. It is due to enter operation in the second quarter of 2016. From there, cargo can be dispatched all over the world – including to New York. From the perspective of many Hamburg companies, New York is currently the biggest and most important US market. The deployment of larger aircraft is a suitable response to this market situation.
