Without any notice period, the trade union ver.di has called the aircraft handling services at Hamburg Airport to strike immediately today, Sunday, March 9. For this reason, the airport has been closed since 6.30 am. This Sunday, 144 arrivals and 139 departures with over 40,000 passengers were planned, of which only around 10 flights were able to take place this morning. The remaining departures and arrivals for the entire Sunday have been canceled.

All passengers affected by cancellations are asked to contact their airline and not to come to the airport. The hotlines of the respective airlines Airlines - Hamburg Airport or the tour operators are available to answer questions about cancellations and rebookings. Tomorrow, Monday, March 10, ver.di has also called a strike in several areas at the airport, including aircraft handling and, since yesterday evening, passenger security checks. As a result, considerable disruption to flight operations is to be expected tomorrow. We recommend all travelers wishing to fly from Hamburg tomorrow to contact their airline.

Statement by Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport: “We are appalled at how ruthlessly ver.di is proceeding: the union is paralyzing the airport - and without notice, right at the beginning of Hamburg's spring break. In doing so, ver.di is primarily harming people. For example, many families who have been saving up for their trip for a long time. For us, the frequency with which the ver.di union is covering Hamburg Airport with strikes is unacceptable. Strikes should always be the last resort and not the first, before we even talk to each other. Just two rounds of strikes between talks - that is clearly excessive and unfair to tens of thousands of travelers who have nothing to do with the disputes!”
