Ver.di strike: No departures possible today and almost half of arrivals cancelled // Security check closed all day // No early check-in for Tuesday flights

UPDATE: 10.03.2025

Hamburg Airport update: Quiet situation in the morning / Affected passengers should contact the airlines

‘The terminals are largely empty today, the situation is calm. Thousands of families were already affected yesterday, and around 40,000 people wanted to depart or arrive here today as well. These plans were cancelled by ver.di. This disproportionate strike is affecting many uninvolved people, some of whom have been saving up for their holidays for a long time or wanted to see their friends and relatives again after a long time,’ says Janet Niemeyer, press officer at Hamburg Airport. Today, the trade union ver.di extended its strike action at Hamburg Airport to include security checkpoint staff as part of the nationwide public sector wage negotiations being held in Berlin.

As passengers are unable to pass through the passenger checkpoint that is on strike today, all 143 departures planned for Hamburg today have had to be cancelled or are taking place without passengers in order to have crews and aircraft where they are needed. All airlines have been informed and are revising their flight plans. There may be delays in the display of airline information and flight schedules.

Arrivals are still possible. Nevertheless, there may also be flight cancellations and significant delays to landings today. At present, the airlines have cancelled 66 of the 141 landings planned for today. Further cancellations may occur. Passengers are asked to keep up to date with their flight status.

All passengers affected by cancellations should contact their airline and not come to the airport. The hotlines of the respective airlines (Airlines - Hamburg Airport) or the tour operators are available to answer questions about cancellations and rebookings.

Due to the ver.di strike, early evening check-in for Tuesday flights is not possible today.

In order to compensate for the cancelled flights, rebookings to Tuesday, 11 March 2025, and subsequent days are to be expected. The airlines had originally planned 144 take-offs and 141 landings at Hamburg Airport for Tuesday. The flights will be heavily utilised.

+++Update: March 9, 2025

Hamburg Airport update:

No departures and arrivals with passengers possible all day today, March 9 // Passengers are asked not to come to the airport and to contact their airline // Tomorrow, March 10: Strike call extended to security checks, considerable disruption expected

ver.di has called the aircraft handling services at Hamburg Airport to strike immediately today, Sunday, March 9, without notice. As a result, all take-offs and landings will not be able to take place with passengers throughout the day. All passengers affected by cancellations are asked to contact their airline and not to come to the airport. The hotlines of the respective airlines (Airlines - Hamburg Airport (hamburg-airport.de) or the tour operators are available to answer questions about cancellations and rebookings.

This Sunday, 144 arrivals and 139 departures with over 40,000 passengers were planned, of which only around 10 flights were able to take place this morning.

Statement by Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport:

“The behavior of the trade union ver.di is dishonorable: The strike without notice hits Hamburg Airport at the start of the vacation season. And it affects many families who have been saving up for their trip for a long time. 40,000 people will not be able to travel as planned today. For us at Hamburg Airport, the frequency with which the trade union ver.di is covering the airport with strikes is unacceptable. Only in Hamburg are the vacations starting now and yet the airport in the Hanseatic city is the only one on strike today. Passengers clearly lack any understanding for this, as we hear again and again on the ground.”

Effects of tomorrow's strike, March 10: no departures possible

Yesterday evening, ver.di also called on the security control staff to strike tomorrow, Monday, March 10. The union is thus extending its strike call from last Friday, which was directed at Flughafen Hamburg GmbH and its subsidiaries. As a result of the newly announced strike at the security checkpoint, no departures with passengers will be possible tomorrow. Arrivals can take place, but considerable disruptions and even cancellations of arrivals are to be expected throughout the day tomorrow. We recommend that all travelers wishing to fly from Hamburg tomorrow contact their airline and do not come to the airport. Departures will not take place with passengers. Tomorrow, 143 departures were planned, with a total of 141 arrivals expected. Over 40,000 passengers are affected by the strike on March 10.

Statement from Katja Bromm, Head of Communications at Hamburg Airport:

“There will also be no departures with passengers at Hamburg Airport tomorrow (Monday). Arrivals are possible, but here too we are expecting considerable disruptions and cancellations. This is the second day in a row and the fifth day in total that ver.di has called for work stoppages at Hamburg Airport. That is significantly more than at other German locations. And this is despite the fact that Hamburg is the only federal state in Germany to be going on vacation. This is excessive and unfair to tens of thousands of travelers who have nothing to do with the disputes.”
